How do I reliably drop the file cache in XP? I need to do some benchmarks between two loading methods of ~1 GB of data for a the best method. To get accurate measurements I must ensure that none of the data is loaded from the cache. I have been rebooting between tests but that takes around 5 minutes so I was looking for a better method.

Thanks for th link. I believe when I wanted to do this I found that link but I was not sure that was the tool I needed for two reasons. First is that my source is a RAID array and second is that I am not sure (from the docs) that it actually wipes out the read ahead cache which is essential.

Although my raid controller was a bios one I am not sure that would have worked either as I was concerned with benchmarking read performance.
I guess I should tell you what I was doing.
My application (medical research grant) has to load cases of two views of a breast that are taken typically as 50 to 85 slices which when animated give a 3D view of the breast. Each slice is a ~5MB dicom file which needs to scaled to fit two 2048x2560 medical imaging monitors and also it needs to be converted from 14bit to 8bit grayscale to display. The problem is that loading the case takes 1 to 2 minutes when the data images are loaded this way. And since doctors do not like when I waste their time I had to find a way of speeding this up. With the raid I benchmarked it reading at 100MB/s so that theoretically I could read 1GB (larger than most cases) in 10 seconds but with loading the case took much longer because of the time spent seeking to > 100 files.
I could have easily avoided this problem with background loading and a machine with > 4GB of memory but the problem here is that the display card has no 64 bit drivers so I had to go to great lengths using memory mapped files to background load 1 case in advance and drop the memory mapped files out of the address space when the 3GB of usable address space ran low.

i understand your problem with loading the dicom slices.
i am CIO of an datacenter.
We hosting 7 hospitals with 2500 beds and 4500 employiees.
i tell you our configuration:
our dicom files are stored at a netapp-920c metrocluster.
with 2 gbit ehternet-interfaces.
in the network we use cisco-3750 as backbone-switches.
the backbone-switches between the storage an the radiology-workstation
have 4 x 2 gbit thruput.
the radiology-workstations are from DELL.
high-performance workstations with dual-core prozessors.
an each workstation are 4 monitors. two of them are 2k montitor grayscale.
the workstations have gbit-ethernet cards.
if you like, i send you tomorrow the config. of the workstation.
but all of them .... speed is relativ.
there are so much components between storage an workstations.
and .. you are not alone on the network.
our doctors must also wait 1 -3 minutes before loading
the dicom-slices from the storage has finished.

Ahh, You have gigabit in your hospitals. At my hospital the standard is 10MBit / Half duplex and even though they install 100Mbit cisco switches they set them to operate at 10MBit. How frustrating... But at least they allowed me to setup my own private gigabit network not connected to theirs.

No that is ok. I have no plans on any more hardware changes as I am in the middle of rolling out a new dual processor dual core box with hardware raid 5 and with 32 bit win2k3 R2 enterprise I was able to install 6GB of memory with 2 free dimm slots. I will spend a little time with some software tweaks (I write all the software from scratch) to make better use of the new system I hope to put this project to rest and to move on to my next project.
Thanks for writing back and saying what you do. I find that interesting.

Just added a 2003 server to a network. It is not the DC, just an ordinary part of the network that happens to be running server. I checked the application event log and there were two errors in it following joining it to the domain. The first was error 1006, ".. cannot bind to my.local domain ...", and the second was error 1030, " ... unable to ... Group Policy ...". Not sure of exact wording on the second one but you get the idea.
I have gone through several message boards looking for possible causes. All of the suggested fixes do not apply (i.e. the system is already configured as suggested). So, I took the next step of removing the computer from the domain and re-adding it. Following the reboot the computer joined the domain correctly (or at least there were no errors in the event log). This lasted until the next reboot when the messages reappeared.
Several of the boards I read talked about one or the other message appearing in the log repeatedly, but in my case they just appear the one time. If I check the system event log after a few hours there will be error message about the new server not being able to receive NTP messages from the DC, so the problem is persistent. During the time the computer appeared to be joined to the domain these messages were not appearing in the log.
Any ideas of what to try would be appreciated...

Today I tried something different. I removed the computer from the domain and rejoined it. Then I shutdown the computer and turned it back on with no errors. I did this twice more with no errors, then I restarted the computer without shutting down and the errors were back. The errors are there now whether I shutdown or not.
Any suggestions on this would be really appreciated.

It almost sounds like its not really getting added into Active Directory when you add it. Log into the DC, is there an entry for that server listed in Active Directory Users & Computers? Try deleting the entry (if one exists) disjoin the server from Active Directory and rejoin it. After that make sure that there is an object listed in the DC. Also are there any entries in the DC’s event log?

Thanx for the reply. That's what most of the boards I read suggested. It was getting added to Active Directory and DNS. There were no messages in the DC event log when I rebooted the other server (two of them actually). I finally put an SMC 10/100 adapter in a PCI slot and used it instead of the built-in Ethernet. It worked the first time.

A client of mine has one of these with a duplexer, connects via a JetDirect card (I must point out at this juncture that we didn't supply any of the hardware.
They use MS Office 2003, primarily Word and Excel, plus a number of custom written apps. Printing from Word and the other apps works fine, but there is this weird thing that happens if they switch from Excel to Word, and back again.
Say they're entering figures in a s/sheet, and they alt-tab to word to double check something, then alt-tab back. They finish punching in the numbers and hit the print button on the Excel toolbar (standard, not customised). Instead of getting a print, they end up with a PCL file in the current folder. 
None of the other apps do this, not even the ones I wrote 
Unfortunately, this happened with Office 2000 as well, so their own IT people upgraded the machine to 2003, but no help (XPSP2, btw).
Now this plainly doesn't make sense, because it only happens if they switch away to word and back again.
Anyone any ideas? I'm trying to get driver versions etc, but it's a tad tricky, since their own IT people are remote from the site, and so am I.

Hi,
Try to reproduce it once again, and watch for tooltip on the 'print' button. It always displays the default printer (or at least the one which is currently set up for use with Excel). Is it "print to file" when the problem is going to occur again?

Nope. The tooltip correctly displays the printer it's going to use, and using the toolbar button or the menu option makes no difference, it still dumps PCL.
OTOH, if excel is launched, a worksheet is loaded, and printed with no switch to word and back again (whether via Alt-TAB or directly via the task bar) it doesn't happen, so it seems to be some odd behaviour when switching from one app to another.

Hi,
I added a customized button in IE that Shows a customized toolbar. Problem is that I can't make it HIDE the toolbar. I don't know if I have to change button's CLSID in registry, as I suspect that the following key
CLSID = {E0DD6CAB-2D10-11D2-8F1A-0000F87ABD16}
refers to a button that only SHOWS the toolbar. It should have the same behavior as IE "Favorites" button.
How can i find out which CLSID belongs to IE "Favorites"?
Anyone ?

A few of you may know that last night 3 of my servers went down and it was 3:00am before my admins were ble to restart them (I'm that guy who needed the coffee).
What i want to know is what problems do you have your servers. Is it normal for me to have a crash a month? I have always had these problems with my servers.
Note: It isn't user error on my part because since about 2-3 years ago i rarely ever need to touch them. I have people who manage them full time.

Servers get old and start failing. We see it all the time. HDDs start losing sectors, the Motherboard starts having loose joints, network cards become flaky. We've seen it all. Typically our servers last around 3 years.

I remember having to solder new crystal oscillators onto network cards; the old ones used to bake nicely over time, and just 'fail' suddenly. Of course, these days, with SMT and everything-on-a-chip, it's easier and cheaper to just put in a new card
And don't get me started on loose joints - my mother always warned me to stay away from low women and loose joints, or maybe it was fast women and loose cars...

I have a PCI/Altera card that I'm communicating with through the PCI bus of my PC with some MDI C++ software that I developed through Visual Studio 2005.
I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this but here goes:
How does one make sure that the software/GUI gets full control of the PCI Bus bandwidth until it has completed it's task? Is there a function I can call in my C++ program prior to starting any data collection or do I have to set something in the PC OS?
In other words, I don't want the Windows 2000 handing over control to other things that want it until my program is completed. I only need about 10-12 secs of control....
Once the executable is running I actually go into task manager and set this process's priority to RealTime. I found this helped with this one PC which is running Windows 2000. However, I tried to see if I can run the same code on a different PC (same OS Windows 2000, and doing the RealTime priority) but it seems as on the original PC what took 9sec to run the new PC it took 14 sec and that's way too long. Needless to say I'm loosing data all over the place....
Please help...

afaik you can't get that level of control over the hardware. You could try a much faster dedicated PC, but windows isn't a realtime OS, and you can't force it to absolutely favor any one application over the remainder of the system. I don't know if a realtime OS (some linux variants qualify) would give you absolute control over the bus either. You could also try reducing the amount of hardware on the PCI bus. Im not sure that just PCI cards that use it though, so you'd need to research the mobo chipset to find out what if anything else is routed through it. Newerboards would probably be less likely to run devices off it instead of doing a direct Device-Northbridge-Cpu connection.

That sounds like you have a buggy shell extension installed. Start by looking in HKCR\*\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers - save a copy of that key to a .reg file, then delete the subkeys one by one until the problem goes away. If that doesn't fix it, keep searching for ContextMenuHandlers keys and repeat.
