Yes. I call it "computers."
My first commercial one was built from a kit, and I had to write the operating system for it to make it do anything. My second was purchased assembled and had an operating system already installed, but I had to write the programs to make it do anything. I had them both for the novelty, and the learning experience to help out at work, but I had no expectation that anyone would actually need or want one at home.

Hi All,
I'm thinking about a contract role at the moment had the interview this morning (it went well) the only thing that bothers me is the fact I was thinking about getting a Mortgage would the fact I am a Contractor be a problem with the lenders in the UK, I will get some proper advise as soon as I am able to, but 'The Lounge' seemed the quickest and easiest way!

Not in the UK, but... when I moved to the U.S. from Canada in 1999, I was taking a contract position. The banks let me get a mortgage based on my job, regardless of type.
Hope you get the job and the mortgage!

You realize you criticized the nouning of a verb by verbing a noun
Now we just need to verb an adjective, adjective an adverb, and adverb a dangling participle...

it used to be that you had to show an earning pattern that would cover the mortgage repayments, so being a contractor would not bar you but it used to be unlikely that you would get a mortgage until you have been contracting for at least a couple of years.
however since then they seem to give them out to anyone walking past the bank/building society and now it would seem to be the preserve of those that have at least twice the value of the house in cash in the bank
so its anyone's guess

Been through this last year - the best thing is to find a decent financial advisor who knows about which lenders will lend to contractors.
Your accountant may be able to recommend someone or at least be able to point you in the right direction.
I also needed to provide signed off accounts and confirmation that I had a contract for the next six months, business bank statements and my own personal data. Seemed to go smoothly enough though

I'd suggest going to speak to a lender or two. It won't affect your chances when you make a formal application, but at least you'll know what the policies are.
Are you planning to contract privately or through an agency? If you're going through an agency, they might be able to provide a letter stating expected rates und utilisation.
I didn't have a problem contracting in Canada, but then I had a track record when I applied. Back in the UK, I was employed, and in any case things may have changed in the 19 years I've been gone!
Good luck!

Are you an independent contractor or are you working for a contract company directly?
If you are a direct hire of a contracting company then you have a steady source of income and it is like having any sort of job.
If you are an independent contractor -- not a steady source of income -- you will probably need a more substantial up front payment before they will make the loan, but it should be possible.
Once you lose your pride the rest is easy.
I would agree with you but then we both would be wrong.

Either you know you customer well, he trusts you, you explain the problems and ask him a contract as an employee just until you get the loan. (and you pay the difference)
If you can't, use a "wage portage" service.
Such service transform contractor paperwork into employee paperwork, and keep some fees. From your customer you are always a contractor. From outsiders perspective, you are normal employee into the "wage portage" company.
If you can't, find a job for 1 month to get the stuff signed, and then resign out.
The thing to keep in mind is that your banker does not care about the reality, he only cares about the box to check for his "loan approval process". Use that to your advantage.

Bit mercenary but I did say mercs of all type! Umm well the general answer is see a financal advisor which I will. Thanks!

I don't agree with this advice. Except if your financial advisor is also a merc, because an employee solution to a merc problem can't possibly fit.
